VI Cruisers Wildfire Recovery Cruise Week 2018 - Trip Recap Featured

wildfire recovery cruise poster Wildfire Recovery Cruise took place July 8 - 15, 2018.

This cruise was organized to return to Williams Lake and the Hwy. 97 corridor on the one year anniversary following last summer’s disastrous fires.

9 VI Cruise vehicles with 17 Cruisers headed towards the interior. The first night in Hope saw 3 vehicles at the Park Motel. The remaining 6 joined the group Friday at Hope, on the Coquihalla Highway and later that day in Cache Creek. The drive from Hope north to Cache Creek was by way of Merritt, then Hwy 97C to Logan Lake, then west past the impressive Highland Valley copper mine to Ashcroft. These were new roads for VI Cruises, very scenic good roads with low traffic. Saturday included stops at Hat Creek Ranch, Clinton to visit the second hand and antique stores then Chasm which is a canyon ecological reserve about 15 min. north of Clinton.  Lunch was in 100 Mile House except Vic and Lori who went ahead to meet Belt Drive Betty. Late afternoon saw us arrive at the Lakeside Motel in Williams Lake.  The first portion of the trip included overcast skies and showers along the way. Victor bought his cowboy hat at Hat Creek and the group was looking for a set of spurs for him for the rest of the trip.

Sunday had VI Cruisers assembling at the Williams Lake Stampede Park while across the street, Chuck’s Auto Supply set up for their 4th annual show and shine which several VI Cruisers entered. We were soon baking in the sun. Brian Sr. of Pioneer Log Homes was on hand and a log carver was creating wood art with his chain saw. Lori helped to man the Community Futures welcome and information tent. Late afternoon saw us in a circle back at the Lakeside. Now, Sherry had won something described as a chair at the car show. It turned out to be a “Baggy Mc Bag” inflatable lounger. Sherry and Debbie spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out what it was, how to inflate it and then testing it out.

Supper was at the nearby Loon Lake Pub Restaurant, then we had an evening circle until wind gusts came up threatening a storm which never quite arrived.

Monday saw Paul and Sherry’s departure for home. Some Cruisers visited friends in Williams Lake while the rest headed north towards Quesnel for the day. Along the way we picked up a free coffee from Victoria’s road side stand where the previous year she had given coffee and snacks to evacuees as they had streamed north out of Williams Lake. We dropped into the Community Futures office in Quesnel, then most found lunch at Mr. Mikes. After a bit of afternoon shopping we headed south again with a side visit to Pearl’s Antique Mall and another stop at the Cariboo Wood Shop gift store. Back at the Lakeside Motel in Williams Lake, some Cruisers opted for the Dog N Suds restaurant while others ordered in pizza.

Tuesday morning had Cruisers visiting the Discovery Centre in Williams Lake and driving into downtown for a final visit. Then it was south with several vehicles stopping for lunch at the Old School’s Bar and Grill where we found one of our Wildfire Recovery Cruise posters on the wall of the “Babe’s” washroom. Other Cruisers carried on to Cache Creek for lunch at Hungry Herbie’s. We all got back together at the Park Motel in Cache Creek for an evening meal at the Heartland Restaurant.

The following day saw Cruisers heading in a variety of directions. Some went towards Ashcroft to drive 97C back towards Merritt and Hope, some headed directly south through the canyon and several back tracked to Hwy 99 to Lillooet then south on Hwy 12 to Lytton. Most Cruisers returned home that day, although 2 vehicles stopped in Chilliwack for the night to permit visiting Hot Rods and Classics and the Pick a Part auto wrecker yard looking for treasures which proved to be in short supply.

It was quite a trip! Lots of fun with good friends. Down the road a ways.
