Rider Friendly Business Features: Kootenay Motorcycle Tours Featured

Kootenay Motorcycle ToursI have lived in the Kootenays for about five years now. I transferred here with my job and began riding the terrific roads here every chance I could. In 2016

I retired from my job on the last Friday in April and had a total knee replacement the following Monday. That ruined my riding for the a few weeks but as soon as I could bend my knee enough to reach the pegs on my Triumph Explorer, I was back on the road.

That was when I had a couple that were both riders come out from Calgary to stay with a buddy of mine. They asked if I could take them on a ride of the local roads, so I agreed and led the three of them on a day long tour. We travelled from Harrop (small community across the West Arm of Kootenay Lake) to Kaslo to New Denver. After a lunch there at the Valhalla Inn we travelled down the Slocan Valley to the Playmor junction where we gassed up. At that point we decided to extend the ride and head up past Castlegar on Highway 3 past Champion Lake then through Salmo, Nelson and back home. The trip took about 5 . hours and the Calgary couple were thrilled with the day’s experience.

That planted the seed in my mind that there might be a need for a business of guiding riders that wanted a similar experience touring the fabulous routes we have here in the Kootenays. I have mapped out several such routes that vary in length from a couple of hours up to 6 hours. The most popular is the ride from Nelson to Salmo then up the amazing winding road to New Denver. This road follows a creek and offers beautiful scenery if you have the time to take your eyes off the endless curves. Returning to Nelson the route takes you through the Slocan Valley, another scenic mountain road with great views of the Arrow Lakes. Destination Highways has ranked the road between Creston and Crawford Bay as the number 1 destination highway in BC and it is part of another of my routes that includes the country’s longest free ferry ride. We would start off in Nelson, head down to Salmo then climb up the high Kootenay Pass to reach Creston. The twistys are nearly nonstop as we head along the east shore of Kootenay Lake to the ferry landing at Crawford Bay. From there we board the Osprey to cross the lake then ride from the Balfour landing back to Nelson. There are more routes that include lesser known but just as spectacular roads like Blewett and Pass Creek roads that are waiting for visiting riders to explore.

I also have formed some partnerships with local hotels such as the Adventure hotel in Nelson and the Kaslo hotel in Kaslo. Toad Rock is a local motorcycle friendly campground that also accepts referrals from Kootenay Motorcycle Tours. There are also a number of summer vacation rental homes available in the area and I have a referral agreement with one of them with very reasonable rates.

Speaking of rates, I supply the adventure at $30 per hour and my website is kootenaymctours.com where there is a link to my email for booking purposes
