motorcycle racingMotorcycle racing is an extensively followed sport all over the world. It involves racers who compete against each other on open courses, tracks or circuits, for the first place. Motorcycle racing can be of different types based on the kind of motorcycle used.

While road racing is by far the most commonly known form of motorcycle racing today, cross-country races and off-road racing exist as well.

Just like any other sport, there are some motorcycle races which are more popular than the others, with racers from different parts of the world competing in them. These races are not just popular in the actual betting markets, but constitute a major segment in the virtual sports betting world too. In fact, you can liken them to the World Cup, Stanley cup, World Series or Super Bowl of the motorcycle racing world. Let’s tell you about some such popular motorcycle races of the world.

MotoGP

Also popularly referred to as the Motorcycle Grand Prix, this is easily the most popular motorcycle road racing event of the year. It is also the oldest form of motorsport world championship. This race was established in the year 1949 by the global motorcycle racing governing body known as The Federation’s Internationale de Motorcyclisme. A four stroke engine is used by the first three classes of MotoGP while the last involves electric motors. Since its inception over 70 years ago, MotoGP has evolved into the most prominent motorcycle race in the road and Superbike racing world. A regular Moto GP season features 19 races, held across 15 different countries. In addition, it features only purpose-built motorcycles. The 2019 edition of MotoGP Championship was won by Marc Marquez who clinched his eighth world title win, scoring a thrilling victory over Fabio Quartararo in the Thailand Grand Prix.

Daytona 200

This is another well-known motorcycle race which is held at the world-renowned Daytona Speedway. It is sanctioned by the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) and holds a very important place in the history of motorsports. The first Daytona 200 happened in the year 1937, with its popularity reaching the peak during the 70s. While its course for Sports bike division is 3.51 mile long today, it used to be 3.56 mile long from 1985 to 2004. This was the era of winners such as Matt Mladin and Scott Russell.

Superbike World Championship

Considered the topmost race of the Superbike division, the Superbike World Championship came into being in the year 1988, and involves multiple races held in different countries. Featuring riders from across the world competing for the first place, this championship has been won by some of the biggest names in the history of AMA, including Nicky Hayden, Ben Spies and Scott Russell. It features a point-based scoring system wherein dividers are expected to score 13 points for four, 16 points for third, 20 points for second and 25 points for first.

 

Motocross World Championship

The topmost race in motocross racing, which is a unique type of off-road motorcycle racing, Motocross World Championship is split into two major classes: MX2 and MXGP, both permitting 4 stroke and 2 stroke engines. The record for most number of championship titles is held by Stefan Everts with 10 championships, followed by Tony Cairoli of Italy who has won 9 championships so far.
