Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation Chopper Raffle - Find out about JMMF! Featured

JMMFThe Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation was established on January 15, 2012, in memory of Jessica Martel, a 26-year old mother of three young children who was murdered by her spouse in Morinville, AB.

With a vision to bring safety and hope to vulnerable individuals and families, the JMMF set out to educate the community about family violence, provide outreach support to individuals living with violence at home and to raise funds for Jessie’s House, the first emergency shelter to serve the Sturgeon Region and City of St Albert.   In September 2018, the JMMF broke ground on Jessie’s House- a safe house for those fleeing domestic violence and in need of shelter from their abuser. The 9000 sq. ft. home is expected to be ready for clients in the spring of 2020. Jessie’s House is unique in its design, housing three family suites and one private suite. Jessie’s House is also only one of three shelters in Alberta that will serve individuals, of any age or gender, the first to serve the Sturgeon Region and City of St. Albert and the first new shelter to be constructed in Alberta in 22 years.

Why Jessie’s House? “My daughter, Jessica Ryan Martel, was murdered by her common-law husband on April 29, 2009 because she had no safe place to go to protect herself and her three young children from an abusive partner. Jessie’s House, ten years in the making, is the response to this tragedy.” Jessie’s House also stands as a reminder to the incredible power of community.  A grassroots movement, the project is the result of family, friends and community uniting to raise money for a needed community resource. To date, almost all of the more than $2 Million secured to complete the $3 Million project has been raised by volunteers, community groups, local business and corporations. With the finish line within sight, the JMMF still has much work to do.

Rosychuk, JMMF President and Co-Founder says, “Our greatest challenge is funding. It’s a difficult time with government cutbacks and the economy.  People are struggling financially. But it’s times like this that we see an increase in domestic violence. The more pressures at home, the more dangerous the situation gets.”

Throughout the year, the JMMF conducts several signature fundraisers, including the Break Free Gala, with MC Danny Hooper at CFB Edmonton on April 25, the Memorial Run on June 20th and a Country Cabaret to be held on November 7th.   More recently, the JMMF has launched an exciting new raffle- for a vintage, custom chopper.  Teena Hughson, Community Engagement Manager explains, “One of our supporters brought forward this unique opportunity and is taking a lead role in ticket sales.  With his support and Belt Drive Betty Media, our raffle sponsor, we have the potential to raise over $100,000 in the next five months.”

The showroom quality vintage chopper, a 2003 RBT Custom Built Motorcycle crafted by American IronHorse, features an S&S 124” polished engine, is 9.5 feet long and valued at $38,000.  With only 1500 tickets printed and being sold for just $100, the race is on to get your hands on this gorgeous ride and open the doors to Alberta’s newest emergency shelter.
