Winterizing Your Ride

amss logo By Liane of the AMSS. It is hard to think that the time has come to winterize your motorcycle, if you haven't already. Not all of us are lucky enough to take off for months during the winter to warmer climates and ride all year round! For those of us stuck in the cold, proper maintenance of your motorcycle will help safety come spring.

Motorcycle gear…Wear It!

RLAP LogoWay back in 1974 I rode a friends Sportster from the Bronx, NY to Key West, FL. I made the trip in two and a half days. Here’s the dumb part. I left NY at the end of February. Wait, it gets worse.

Drinking and riding…Don’t do it!

RLAP LogoLast week, I received a call from a friend that asked me if I would like to join him on a poker run. He said the poker run was for a good cause. They were trying to raise some money for a rider injured in a motorcycle crash. My friend told me they had picked some of the best roads in central Florida and will cover 125 miles with all the stops at the best biker bars in the area.

How to plan ahead as a rider

RLAP LogoThere’s a scene in the original Rocky movie where Rocky has to collect a late loan payment from a dock worker. Rocky was told by his loan shark boss that if the guy doesn’t pay up, he’s to break his thumbs. It turns out, the dock worker only has half the money he owes. Instead of breaking the guy’s thumbs, Rocky chastises him and screams out, “you should a planned ahead”.

Failure to negotiate a turn

RLAP LogoIf you’ve ridden a motorcycle for any length of time, I’d be willing to bet at some point you’ve ridden into a turn a little too fast.  If you were lucky, you made it through the turn without low siding, running into an oncoming vehicle or going over a cliff.  The fact that you made it through the turn without crashing doesn’t mean you’re a skillful rider, it just means you’re a lucky one.

Men riders vs the lady riders

RLAP LogoGenerally, my classes consist of a mixture of both sexes, however, the majority are always men. This fact is simply because men buy a lot more motorcycles than women, however, female riders are the biggest growing segment in motorcycling.
